Gardening-An Expression

Gardening-An Expression
Give the same plants to several people, you will see several arrangements. Each one distinct and different, yet, using the same plants. This is the ultimate reward of gardening- a means to express, to create with the help and inspiration from the gifts of Nature.Gardening is not just physically and aestheticallyrewarding. It enriches the spirit. It awakens one’s creativity that lies dormant from neglect, or lack of motivation, or a popular excuse, not enough time.Gardening is fast becoming a popular hobby of the times. From the tropics , to the frigid climes, gardening centers are offering more choices to tantalize even the mostconservative taste. Each year, gardeners look forward with excitementto their gardening; a hobby they take passionately. What new plants are being introduced? What variety of surprises awaits them? The ornamental gardener will be glorious with the new plants or hybrids for the presentgrowing season. The vegetable/herb gardenerlooks forward with anticipation at harvest time. With so much variety to choose from, what factorsdetermine which plants to buy? After considering thesoil, weather, sun/shade location factors, the choice is all about self- expression. No two gardens are alike, given the same set of plants.Colors are as revealing as the plants. A conservative gardener will opt for traditional plants. At times, you see the same plants, the same arrangements year after year. Aha!! Perhaps the gardener does not adapt to change too quickly. It may be lack of time, or changeof physical health. Vibrant colors in the garden reflect a vibrant gardener.A garden bursting with colors is very attractive andpleasing to look at. It is inviting. What about passion? They say red is a color of passion,of energy and courage. Add white to the reds, and the garden beckons the passer-by to take a look. Someonesaid this combination looks like a candy cane. My garden is overcome by burst of yellows and orange, not really by choice. Somehow, it gives out a golden glow as the blooms bask in the sun. It reflects my enthusiasm for life. Many of my plants are gifts from friends, treasures for my garden. Yellow flowers remind me of my mother.Purples and blues in the garden are colors of reflection, of peace and calm. Add white flowers to this and itinvites a meditative mood. After colors, the arrangements of the plants reveal something of the person. I have a friend whoseflowerbeds are symmetrical, weedless, picture-perfect, right out of a magazine. Indeed, this expressesher organized way of thinking and living. A gardener who loves to re-arrange the plants andloves to add new plants and ornaments shows anenthusiastic and energetic spirit, ready to welcomechange, eager to experiment. What about an overgrown garden? Perhaps it reflectssomeone with scattered energies, at times, a fullplate, or one who does not have the time or energyto tend the garden. It may well show one who startswith a burst of enthusiasm that wanes quickly afterthe planting is done.No matter how you plan your garden, it is acreative tool that allows you to express yourself.Gardening is therapeutic, physically, mentally and spiritually.Happy gardening.Don't forget to talk to your plants.E N D

Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest

Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest
Submitted by robsubart22
The Anglo-Saxon ways of living were greatly altered by the advent of the Normans in the latter half of the eleventh century. In architecture, as well as horticulture, the Normans excelled the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the Conquest. But, until the Normans had subdued the entire country, home life was an impossibility, and there was no occasion for domestic architecture or decoration. Thus, while the early monasteries were substantial stone buildings, commonly situated in the broadest and most fertile valleys, castles were ruder structures, generally erected on windy hilltops, where their inmates devoted both time and space to projects for offence and defense. These bare strongholds were impractical for such a peaceful pursuit as gardening. After a few years, the danger of insurrection having lessened, the Normans replaced their first wooden structures by permanent castles built of stone. Of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, Berkeley Castle is perhaps the most complete example now existing. The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. Around the massive building runs a terrace intended both for a walk and to prevent the walls from being mined by besiegers. One of these terraces, covered with grass and flanked by an ancient yew hedge clipped in the shape of rude battlements, forms a quaint bowling green. Terraces, like the one adjoining these battlements, were, in those tumultuous times, the only safe place for the ladies to enjoy an airing. A portion was often reserved for their special use, and, as at Castle Carlisle, called the Ladies Walk. There, at a much later period, Mary, Queen of Scots, when captive, was allowed to take her exercise. At Bridgenorth, a pleasant terrace walk, much admired by Charles I, encircles the ancient castle walls and is more than half a mile in compass. On the borders of such a terrace, beside the hedge, a few herbs were usually cultivated by the chatelaine to beused in sickness, or to make a poignant sauce for whetting the satiated appetite.

Getting Started with Knitting

Getting Started with Knitting

Learn to knit, and get those creative juices flowing... I can still remember the moment I learned to knit. I was 6 years old, and my grandma sat down with me while my mother was busy with my new baby brother. She taught me to cast on, and knit, and I was so excited I took my knitting everywhere.. it was all uneven and horrid, but I was excited that I had learned something new, and still love to knit to this day! I am left handed, and always found many crafts hard to do because of it, such as crochet. But knitting can be done easily whether you are left handed or right handed. Learning to knit as a child is a great way, but if you never did learn to knit, and would like to, then why not get started now!Take it in little steps. Learn to cast on one day, and then learn to do the basic garter stitch the next day, and PRACTICE. That is the biggest part of knitting, is practicing. Once you have mastered the garter stitch, then you can try to purl, which is going through the back of the stitch. Once you have mastered basic knitting, then you will need to learn to cast off. Continue to practice and make lots of blocks of knitting. (you can always make them into a quilt later!). There are many books, ebooks, and videos on the market that will teach you how to knit, learning from an experienced knitter sitting right beside you, will still always be the best way, like my grandma did. But the next best thing I feel is a video. One where you get a real good close-up of what the teacher is doing, not something far away. With a video, you can play it over and over again, and if you sit there with your needles and yarn, you will get this new skill. Its good for the brain to learn new crafts and skills, it gets the creativity flowing and keeps the brain alert. It is never too late, and you are never too old to learn something new! Try it, knitting is good for relieving stress, as many men are finding. Knitting has become popular amongst celebrities and many professional men.. to help with stress and become creative. So, get yourself some knitting needles and yarn, and maybe a basic pattern to get started with, once you learn your basic skills. Try it, you may like it, so watch a good video and learn to knit...learn to knit video

Forming Tools & Equipment for Jewellery Making

Forming Tools & Equipment for Jewellery Making

Forming MetalForming metal is an essential part of jewellery making, and as a process the level of skill involved is often overlooked. Forming refers to any process that maneuvers metal into the desired shape or design. Unlike many other skills in jewellery making forming is more a combination of a range of techniques that change an objects shape, rather than one particular process. Under the heading of forming are processes such as bending, chasing, repousse, sinking, hammering, using stamps/dies and forging. These processes will affect the pieces shape, thickness and often the texture of the metal being worked on.Forming ToolsThe range of jewellery tools used for forming metal is as wide and varied as the different processes contained within the skill. The key forming tools available are:MalletsThe simple mallet allows the craftsman to apply direct force without stretching or damaging the metal. The head of the mallet is softer than the metal so as not to mark the surface.Mandrels or TribletsMandrels or Triblets are used for forming shapes, and are most associated with rings or bangles. Mandrels are available in a variety size and shapes, and in both steel & wood.HammersHammers can complete a variety of jobs from stretching the metal, polish/smoothing or adding texture. Jobbing hammers are ideal for general use and metal forming. The planishing hammer is used for smoothing, shaping and polishing metal. Riveting hammers are designed with a small head for detailed rivet work. Raising, bossing and chasing hammers are used in the different stages of forming.Doming Blocks & PunchesDoming blocks & punches are the ideal way of shaping metal and making domed, shaped pieces or hollow beads. Pieces of circular metal/discs are place over the hollows of a doming block, and then using punches and a hammer the metal is formed into a shape. Steel BlocksSteel blocks provide the ideal flat surface for working, flattening sheet or wire or to support work as it is raised or forged, riveted or textured.Swage BlocksRather like doming blocks, Swage blocks help form metal into tubes, curves and channels. Different blocks will allow different shapes and sizes to be formed.Sandbag / Grit filled CushionThese bags provided support whilst you work and form your piece. They help keep your work firm and in place whilst working.PliersPliers have a multitude of uses but they are the most basic tool for holding/gripping, forming and shaping wire. Having a basic selection of needle nose, round nose, flat nose, half round and a pair of parallel action pliers, will give the jeweller the flexibility to complete most jobs.StakesOften used by silversmiths, the metal is placed over the stakes (usually clamped independently into a vice) and hammered to achieve the shape required. Various shapes can be achieved by using different stakes.FilesFiles are essential for removing excess material, and fine tuning and shaping your piece. The different sizes available allow the jeweller to work large areas or at a more intricate level. To start with buy a selection of shapes containing round, square, triangular, half round and warding. Plus consider the cut ranging from 0 the coarsest, to 6 the finest.Draw PlatesDraw plates are most commonly used to reduce the size or change shape of wire. Each plate has a series of holes through which the wire is passed through, this then changes the size of the wire. The holes in the plate are of decreasing size allowing you to continue draw down the wire to the required size.Rolling MillsThese larger machines often seen in jewellers’ workshops are ideal to reduce the thickness of sheet, or help decorate sheet. If used with Square and D shape sections rolling mills can be used to form or shape wire. This selection of forming tools & equipment allow jewellers, and metalsmiths to create any number of shapes, textures and patterns. As with all jewellery projects the range of forming tools jewellers have will start with the basic i.e. pliers, hammer and perhaps a doming set, and then expand as their projects demand.
